What Does Psalm 139:2 Mean?

Thou knowest my down-sitting and my up rising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

Psalm 139:2(WBS)

Verse of the Day

So many of the psalms of David have become special favourites to generations of God's children for this "man after God’s own heart" so often pens the inner-thoughts that flood our own minds, as we reflect on the wonders of our Heavenly Father and as we consider man's many imperfections in the light of His glorious perfection.

How many of us have spent much, if not all, of our lives hiding behind a protective mask that prevents others and ourselves from really seeing into the core of our being? But David, in the opening words of this transparent song, tells it how it is: "You have searched me, and You know me." There are no secrets from God.

He knows every part of our inner being. The omniscient God is fully acquainted with the thoughts of our hearts and the conduct of our lives, even when we forget that He is with us, or during those times when we feel all alone. He knows our waking and sleeping moments and the motives that guide our actions and attitudes. There is nothing hidden with Him.

God knows the thoughts and exploits of every man, sinner and saved alike, but He is deeply interested in the reasonings, actions, and attitudes of His own, blood-bought children in a special way. Nothing is hid from Him and He is aware of the sin that lurks at the door and knows in advance the wise or foolish choices we will make. He is perfectly acquainted with each simple everyday act of our lives, and even the times when we sit down or rise up are all known to Him!

Such knowledge is beyond our simple understanding, but what a comfort this should be to all those that trust in His name, for there is nothing that can separate us from His continuous attendance - nothing can happen which is unknown to Him. Every happening in our lives is known before and permitted by Him. Praise His holy name.

As we ponder the gentle kindness, faithful protection, and loving nurture we receive, moment by moment, should we not glory that we are known so intimately by the God of our salvation, the Saviour of our soul, and that He is with us every step of the way?

My Prayer

Loving Father, I don’t understand how this can be, but praise Your wonderful name that You are with me every step of the way, every moment of my day. I thank You, in Jesus' name, AMEN.
