Long ago You established the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.Psalm 102:25(HCSB)
This verse recalls the prayer of a man that is severely afflicted by all the distressing circumstances of life that were battering him. He is crying out to the Lord for mercy, both for himself and for his afflicted nation, Israel. He is a man that can neither eat nor sleep and whose bitter tears of woe, are flowing from his eyes to mingle in with his drink. He feels that God is ignoring his prayers and likens himself to a doomed prisoner on death row, that is awaiting his execution.
Following the flood of bitter woes that tumbles from his pleading heart and having cried out to the Lord for mercy and help – this man finally turns his thoughts to the living God to whom he is praying – the Creator of the worlds – the Maker of heaven and earth – the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, all-wise, loving and righteous God of the whole universe.
When he finally ceased his mourning, he started to take every thought captive - remembering that the God to whom he is praying is the Creator of the universe, Who established the earth - and so he started to worship God, with the word, Long ago You established the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. When a man takes steps to remember Who his God is and turns his heart to true worship, he starts to remember exactly Who our Father is and what God has promised His children.
Once faith in the truth of who we are in Christ starts to kick in, we can claim God's promises, for He is a faithful God, Whose promises are "yes" and "amen", in Christ. Once we stop looking at our overwhelming circumstances in fear – our faith begins to blossom in God, Who alone can help us in our distresses - for the heaven is His throne and the earth is His footstool.
The first flickering flame of faith was lit when this weeping man when he remembered that God is the eternal Creator and cried out: Long ago You established the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. He continued to proclaim the eternal qualities of God: Even they will perish, but You endure forever; they will wear out like a garment; Like clothing. You will change them, and they will be changed. Finally he rejoiced that God is faithful and unchanging - You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end. The children of Your servants will continue, and their descendants will be established before You.
The prayer of a frightened man that started with a focus on self and his own mountainous problems, concluded with a prayer of assured faith and worship of his God, the Creator of the worlds – the Maker of heaven and earth – the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, all-wise, loving and righteous God of the whole universe – Who knows each of us by name and cares enough to take the difficulties of life to cause us to turn our focus on Christ and not on ourselves - for when we rest in the promises of God - fear is replaced by faith.
Loving Father, what a wonderful God You are for You alone have the power to save and the ability to take every problem of life and use it as a blessing to draw us closer into Your loving arms, in Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
