What Does Psalm 45:2 Mean?

You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore God has blessed You forever.

Psalm 45:2(NASB)

Verse of the Day

All Scripture is inspired of the Holy Spirit, and Psalm 45 was composed in praise of the splendour and majesty of the king and in joyful celebration of his forthcoming wedding. His goodness and grace is commemorated. His strength and power is proclaimed. His humility and truth is applauded and His wealth and majesty is equally acknowledged.

But this is more than the exaltation of an earthly king for we also read: "Your throne O God is forever and ever, righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom and God has anointed You with the oil of gladness above all Your companions." Oh yes, all Scripture is inspired of God and Psalm 45 is a glorious hymn of praise and celebration of the King of kings, God's own anointed.

It is in verse 2 that we read that the King is fairer than all the sons of men and that grace is poured upon His lips. What an accurate description of our Lord and Saviour, for He is the eternal King of kings in Whom dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. His words and actions are full of grace and truth, and He is worthy of all honour and praise.

But this is more than a psalm proclaiming the beauty of Jesus and highly exalting His holy name, for it continues on to give advice to His glorious bride who is without spot and wrinkle or any such thing. She is exhorted to give Him honour and praise, and forsaking all others keep herself only for Him. She is permitted to wear fine linen, bright and pure, for the fine linen represents the righteous acts of the saints.

Yes, all Scripture is God-breathed and written by inspiration of the Holy Spirit for our learning, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. And although in context this was most certainly composed to celebrate the majesty of the Israel's honoured king, it provides a beautiful description of great David's greater Son the Lord Jesus Christ and His bride, which is the Church. For He is the fairest among all the sons of men, grace is poured upon His lips, and God has blessed Him forever and ever. And by grace through faith in Christ, we have been chosen to be His bride.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, I stand in awe of Your goodness and grace that You would choose me to be saved, by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus. Thank You that I should be given the place of honour in becoming His Bride. May I give Him the honour and glory due to His highly exalted name. I pray that forsaking all others, I would keep myself only unto Him, not only in this world but in the ages to come. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
