What Does Psalm 31:19 Mean?

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!

Psalm 31:19(ESV)

Verse of the Day

More and more, the greatness, goodness, and reliability of God is contrasted with the insignificance, inconsistency, and limitations of man. Increasingly, the bounteousness, generosity, and grace of a perfect God is identified as distinctly different from the selfish disinterest that is the hallmark of the children of mankind.

God's grace and provision touches all the children of men: "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.... He is the same yesterday, today and forever." But the children of men have, in prideful rebellion, rejected their Maker and delight to spew scorn on His chosen flock who have placed their trust in Him.

But God knows those that are His. He knows those who believe in His free and unmerited gift of salvation, trust in His gracious and unconditional love, reverence His eternally holy name, and take refuge is the overshadowing protection of His mighty wing. And to those that believe in His name, He has stored up for us grace upon grace and poured out blessing upon blessing, for we are accepted in the Beloved and eternally secured in Christ.

The eternal storehouse of God has been filled, shaken together, and continues to overflow into the hearts and lives of those that love Him so that their lives become a witness of God's goodness to children of men who have spurned His gift of grace and refused His offer of salvation.

At the end of the Psalm, David concludes with a wonderful exhortation: "Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints! For the Lord preserves the faithful, and fully repays the proud person. Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord."

Let us not be influenced by the mindset of the children of this world system who become impatient and despondent with the troubles and trials that face them. But let us rather reverence the Lord our God in thought, word, and deed, and let our lives be a witness in the sight of the children of men of the abundant goodness of God, as we take refuge in the promises in His Word. For He has already blessed us in the heavenlies with every spiritual blessing through time and eternity – in CHRIST.

My Prayer

Loving Father, You are good and gracious, and I love and trust You. Keep me under the shadow of Your wing, that I may be a light that reflects Your bountiful grace and eternal glory. May I shine Your light to the children of man, for whom Christ died. In His name I pray, AMEN.
