What Does Psalm 143:1 Mean?

Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications! Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness!

Psalm 143:1(NASB)

Verse of the Day

From beginning to end, this psalm of David is a petition and prayer to the Lord that covers every possible eventuality that is likely to touch each of our lives at one time or another. He calls out to the Lord to hear his prayer, to pay heed to his supplication, and to answer him according to His faithfulness, for the psalmist knows that the Lord is faithful and will answer him in His righteousness. David cries for mercy and forgiveness, which flows into a deeper concern about the continuing onslaught and attacks from His enemies, identifying the desperate situation in which David found himself.

His trust in the Lord does not falter, as David begins to reflect on the goodness of the Lord and starts to express his intense longing for God, before breaking into song about the great goodness and perfect righteous of our Heavenly Father. It is only then that his heart cries out: "Let me hear of Your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting You. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to You."

From beginning to end, this is a psalm that could be the prayerful petition of any of God's children. No matter how far any one of us have strayed from the Lord, He hears our penitential cries, for we have a God who hears our prayers and gives ear to our supplications. We have a God Who is faithful in His righteousness.

Whatever problems or difficulties we face, He is our protection and provider. Whether we are seeking the Lord with all our hearts or urgently crying to Him for pity, He is a good and gracious God and is faithful and just to answer all our cries.

Let us, like David, put our entire trust in the Lord and open our ears morning by morning, to hear of His loving-kindness and to joyfully sing of His never-ending faithfulness.

Let us be ready and willing to humbly submit to the Holy Spirit within, and ask Him to lead us and to guide us, to teach us and to train us in the way that He would have us go. Day by day, let us rejoice in the Lord our God, and lift up our hearts in prayer and praise, for He alone is worthy.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, how I thank and praise You that Your loving-kindness is new every morning and that You are ready and willing to lead and guide me in the way that I should go. Give me a teachable spirit, I pray, and a heart that is filled with praise for You alone. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
