You are my hiding place and my shield; I wait for Your word.
Psalm 119:114(NASB)
Sin caused fallen man to be separated from his holy Creator, and yet God in His grace, wisdom, justice, and mercy, chose to reveal Himself and His glorious plan of salvation through His Word. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, the written Word of God was penned and preached over centuries of time to the people whom God had chosen to be His eternal inheritance.
The history of Israel is replete with examples where God protected His people from evildoers and those that would destroy them. His pillar of fire led them safely through the wilderness and the cloudy column of God hid them from the advancing Egyptian forces. Underneath were the everlasting arms of God which bore them up on eagle's wings, and He sent His terror ahead of His people to throw their enemies into confusion.
Moses was hidden in a basket of bulrushes, and Sarah was protected in the palace of the king. No surprise that the Psalmist could write: "You are my hiding place and You are my shield."
But this great Psalmist concluded his exaltation of God with this sentence: "I wait for Your Word." History had proved God's faithfulness to His people, but faith believed in His forthcoming protection and anticipated His future help. And so the Psalmist was able to proclaim with assurance: "I wait for Your Word."
The chronicles of old and the writings of Moses had recorded the many times when God had protected His people and had become their safe hiding place and a protective shield from the assault of the enemy. But the Psalmist trusted the whole counsel of God and believed that His future promises of deliverance of His people was faithful and true, although he recognised that he may have to wait for its final fulfilment. The Psalmist had learned that the Word of the Lord is trustworthy and true, and though the fulfilment of God's Word may tarry, he would wait for it patiently for it will surely come.
The Lord is no less our Shield and Hiding Place in this sin-sick world in which we live. He is still our Rock of defence and our Strong Tower in these troublesome times, and His precious promises to all His children continue to be 'yes' and 'amen' in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are my hiding place. Help me to abide in You, day by day. Thank You that You are my Shield and Defender. Help me to remain covered in the spiritual armour of God so that I may stand fast in Christ in the evil day. Thank You that Your Word of truth is altogether sure and can never fail. Help me to patiently endure the trials and difficulties of life, knowing that the day is fast approaching when Jesus will come to take me to be with You, Whom to know is life eternal. To You be all praise and glory. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.
