What Does Psalm 72:6 Mean?

May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, Like showers that water the earth.

Psalm 72:6(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The world is weary and war-torn, and individually and nationally the world longs for peace. People yearn for a ruler who will usher in a golden age of peace and prosperity. The world aches for a perfect reign of righteousness and virtue. They crave a time when the groans of creation cease, the wicked are punished, the hungry are fed, the oppressed are vindicated, the weary are refreshed, and justice rules in the corridors of power.

A time is indeed coming when the earth shall be filled with justice and peace, and the King of righteousness will reign supreme over the whole earth. He will judge with equity and peace, but it will never come about through the manipulations of men, democratic rule, imposed authoritarianism, or by majority votes in governmental ballot boxes.

It is only when Christ is crowned as King of king and Lord of lords that the earth will be filled with the glory of God and the rule of heaven's perfect Law will be imposed throughout the kingdom of Christ. It is only during the Messianic rule of the Lord Jesus, that wrongs will be righted and a righteous rule will be established throughout the world.

At that time, He will judge the people fairly. The mountains will bring forth peace and justice will be given to the poor. The children of the needy will be saved, and the yoke of the oppressor will be broken in pieces. The name of the Lord will be feared throughout all generations: "He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass and will be likened to refreshing showers that water the whole earth," and the days of His righteousness will flourish.

Prophets, priests, psalmists, and other holy men of God have prophesied of that coming time when this utopic peace will be established on earth and Jesus will be the supreme Ruler of the whole world. As those who have been saved by grace through faith, we look to that time when, with Christ, we will rule and reign with Him for 1000 years before His eternal kingdom extends into the eternal ages to come, when there will be a new heaven and a new earth. But until that time we must occupy until He comes in the clouds to take us to be with Himself. Let us pray in spirit and truth - Maranatha - Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You sent the Lord Jesus to be Your anointed King Who is appointed to judge the world in righteousness and rule the nations with equity. I look forward to that time when the earth will be filled with His glory. In the meantime, I pray that I may live to His praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
