What Does Romans 8:10 Mean?

If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

Romans 8:10(NASB)

Verse of the Day

One of the mysteries that were hidden for ages and generations but which was revealed to Paul for Church age believers is the indwelling Holy Spirit of Christ.. for all who are saved by grace through faith in Him. How astonishing that our body has become a temple of the Spirit of God by faith, and that we have the resurrected Spirit of Christ dwelling in our heart - living in our body, empowering us to live godly in Christ Jesus and enabling us to live as God designed us to live. We were made to live in total dependence upon the Lord and not to rely upon ourselves. We were made to enjoy fellowship with our heavenly Father and to be led and guided by His Holy Spirit, Who guides us into all truth - and as we abide in Christ and He abides in us.

Although we might argue that our body is alive, we must never forget that as sinners, we are born spiritually dead in our sin, with a fallen sin nature that is estranged from God. We must not forget that we inhabit a body that is subject to sin, disease, disintegration and death.

It is only by grace through faith in Christ that we are made spiritually alive. It is only at the point of salvation that the Spirit of Christ comes to live in our heart so that our human spirit is regenerated and made alive. It is only by faith in the finished work of Christ at Calvary that we are given the indwelling Spirit of Christ and Christ's imputed righteousness.

If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ then he is unsaved - he is spiritually dead and does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then you have been born-again by faith in His finished work.. saved by grace through faith in Christ - spiritually alive, with the actual Spirit of the resurrected Christ living within your actual body!

The body, in which our human spirit and soul lives is simply a tent in which we reside. Although our spirit has been made alive and we have a new Christ-like nature by faith in Him - our body remains subject to death.. due to sin and our imputed sin nature.. But praise God that even: though the body is dying because of sin, the spirit is eternally alive because of righteousness - our once dead human spirit is alive by faith in Christ. Indeed it was made alive because of the imputed righteousness we received by faith in Christ, at salvation...

And praise be to God.. that one day we will receive a new body.. a resurrected and eternal body of flesh and bone - just like the resurrected body of Christ. The day is coming when our mortal frame will have put on immortality and we will be saved - spirit, soul AND body, when death is swallowed up in victory - and together with all the saints we will sing: O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?'

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that I have been born again of the Spirit by faith and been made spiritually alive in Christ. Thank You that I have the Spirit of the resurrected Lord Jesus living in me. Thank You that although I live in a body of sin which is subject to physical death I will one day be clothed with an immortal body - by faith.. in Christ Jesus.. my God and Saviour, in Whose name I pray, AMEN
