What Does Romans 8:16 Mean?

The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God's children,

Romans 8:16(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

Man is made up of body, soul, and spirit, and the human spirit of man is that inner part of our being that communes with the Father. Only believers have a living regenerated spirit that can have fellowship with the Father and abide in Christ, for unsaved man remains spiritually dead in trespasses and sins, without God and without hope in the world.

The indwelling Holy Spirit of God was given to each regenerated child of God at the moment of rebirth. He took up permanent residence within the heart of all those that believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and we are being built into the temple of God – created with living stones, as Christ's witnesses to the world.

When we live and move and have our being to the glory of God, in submission to the Holy Spirit, and with Christ as our central delight and joy, the indwelling Spirit of Christ DWELLS in our heart as we ABIDE in Him and REST in His love.

It is as we dwell in Him and abide in Christ that we fellowship with the Father and commune with His Holy Spirit Who bears witnesses with our human spirit and that we are children of God. What wonderful wisdom of God that the Spirit of Christ can give such beautiful reassurance with our regenerated human spirit. He knows us so intimately, so personally, He is far off and aloof, but intricately involved with every part of our lives. And He helps us in this amazing personal, intimate way, in every part of our lives, even in our prayer life: "The Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."

We do not need outwards signs, visible proofs, or audible evidences of His presence in our heart. For we have His promises in the Word of His saving work of grace in our lives, and we have the permanent indwelling Spirit of Christ Who is a sure witness in our heart that we truly are the children of God.

My Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for the indwelling Holy Spirit and His witness with my human spirit. I want to abide in You and You in me so that Your Holy Spirit will have free access to teach to me and to guide me into all truth. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
