"Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?
Matthew 24:45(NASB)
This is a parable about the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, when He returns to earth in power and great glory to set up His visible Millennial kingdom as Israel's Messiah-King. It is a prophecy that will be finally realised at the end of Daniel's 70th week, following that terrible time of Jacob's Trouble.
Believers in this verse are warned to be alert and watchful, knowing that the return of the Lord is very close. And although this is a warning that is specifically written to Israel in connection with His Second Coming at the end of the Tribulation (when Israel cries out for their Messiah to save them), it is equally pertinent for Church age saints today, for we too are called to be watchful and ready.
Christians in the Church dispensation are also called to watch and be ready for Christ's any day return. We are also to obediently carry out all His instructions as we wait for the trumpet to sound when our heavenly Bridegroom will return in the clouds to take us to be with Himself for ever.
We are to faithfully carry out the good work that God has given us to do as we work and watch and wait for the Lord Jesus to come take us to be with Himself forever. We are to wait, and watch, and work, knowing that the return of Christ is at hand, and the day is fast approaching when we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump.
Today, Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the Majesty on high, and during His absence, those that are wise and faithful will obediently and diligently discharge their duties. In His absence we are His earthly representatives, and we are instructed to occupy until He comes, to obediently carry out all His instructions, and to finish the good work that God has prepared for us to do.
There are however two types of believers. There are spiritual believers and those that are carnal. The spiritual believer is here identified as a wise and faithful servant. However, the carnal Christian is designated as a wicked and evil servant. The faithful servant obediently carries out the instructions of their Lord while caring for the people of God and anticipating the any day return of their Master. But sadly the unfaithful servant is unconcerned about the return of his Lord, and begins to beat his fellow-servants and brings upon himself the disapproval of the Lord.
Let us faithfully heed the instructions of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and obediently carry out our duties to His praise and glory, knowing that such a servant will receive a wonderful reward, while the unfaithful servant will suffer great loss.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and for the lessons that You would have me to learn. I pray that I may faithfully fulfil all the work that You have called me to do with a cheerful disposition, as I watch for Your return and occupy until You come. To Your praise and glory, AMEN.
