What Does John 17:2 Mean?

even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

John 17:2(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The hour for Christ to be glorified had arrived for, in His wisdom, God chose the sacrifice of His beloved Son on the Cross as the most shattering event of eternity. The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. May we never boast except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ's burden was to glorify, honour, exult, and magnify His Father in heaven, through His willing obedience and joyful submission to His will - by draining the bitter cup of suffering and death. But the Son also was to be glorified, honoured, exulted, and magnified by the Father, and reinstated to His position at the right hand of the Father, in the heaven of heavens.

As a result of Christ's redemptive work at Calvary, God gave the beloved Son of His love His full sovereign authority over all humanity, which qualifies the Lord Jesus to bestow eternal life on all whom the Father has given to the Son.

"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on HIM should not perish but have everlasting life." It is faith in the full and finished work of the Son and trusting Him as Saviour that is the criteria for reconciliation to the Father - as was agreed by the Godhead in the eternal council chamber of heaven, before the world began.

ALL authority in heaven and on earth has been given to HIM.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that I am in Christ, and that He is my Lord and Saviour. Thank You that He has paid the price for my sin and that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Just as the Lord Jesus spent His life glorifying You through His willing obedience and joyful submission, may I in like manner, live my life in willing obedience and joyful submission to Him. To Your praise and glory, AMEN.
