What Does Romans 7:23 Mean?

but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

Romans 7:23(NASB)

Verse of the Day

As Christians, we are sojourners and pilgrims passing through this world on our way to our eternal home. We have a great inheritance, which is reserved for us in heaven, and this glorious, future perspective is to encourage us and to lead us to a godly life and holy living, which will result in our internal victory.

Our vocation is to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, but too often our fleshly tendency is to follow a different path. We are instructed to resist the fleshly lusts that war against the soul, and this is an ongoing battle between the old sinful nature and our new holy life in Christ. This is a conflict raging within our innermost being, a war against the soul-life of every believer.

This internal battle for supremacy of our soul is between these two opposing agents which are warring against our emotions, our choices, our mentality, our conscience. It is a war against our thinking, our feelings, our volition, and it is against the godly norms and standards that we know to be true. As a believer we can either operate by an internal principle that is from God or submit to these external pressures, which battles for supremacy in our earthly life.

When like Paul we discover our old sin nature waging war against our new life in Christ, attempting to once again make us captives to the law of sin and death (that emanates from our fleshly nature), may we never forget that it is CHRIST alone Who will rescues us from this body of death.

It is not by our might nor by our power that we triumph in this war, but by the Holy Spirit working within, and His victory in us is what glorifies our Father, Who is in heaven.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, keep me ever mindful of the truth that there is an internal war that is seeking to draw me back into my former fleshly ways. Thanks be to God, Who delivers me from this inner conflict, through Jesus Christ my Lord, AMEN.
