So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs.
Hebrews 1:4(HCSB)
The opening verses of Hebrews lay the foundation for the glorious truth of Who the Lord Jesus Christ is and how great is His status and His position. He has a name that is more excellent that any created being, for He is the eternal God incarnate. He is the infinite God in the flesh, the Creator of the universe, born into the human race - fully God but also fully man, yet without sin.
His status and position is above every created thing, whether in heaven, or on earth, or under the earth, for He is the One through Whom all things are created, including humankind and the angelic hosts of high. His rank is so much more superior to the angels rank in position, and honour, and glory, and power. He alone is the uncreated God of all.
It was angels that delivered the Law of God to Moses, for angels are God's holy messengers and all the heavenly hosts of angels were created collectively as sons of God, created by God to be God's ministers, created to do God's bidding.
But in these last days, it was no angel that was sent to earth. It was the third Person of the Godhead, sent to deliver God's full and final message of salvation to all Who will trust in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And so for a little while, the One Who created these heavenly beings humbled Himself and took upon Himself the form of a man. He visited the world that He Himself created, clothing Himself in human flesh, yet without sin. For man had lost his elevated position as governor of the earth to a rebel angelic host, when man sinned in the Edenic garden.
And being found in appearance as a man, Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Yes, the eternal Son of God, Creator of heaven and earth, humbled Himself and was born as Son of Man, even making Himself, for a short time, a little lower that the rebel angelic forces under the leadership of their rebellious leader Satan who had become ruler over the fallen world into which He came.
But through His obedience to suffer and die for the sins of the world, God has highly exulted Him and given Him a name that is above every name: "That at that name of Jesus every knee should bow."
And so the Son of God as Son of Man became higher in rank than the angels He created, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs for He was given the name Jesus: "The Lord is my salvation - for He shall save His people from their sins."
Heavenly Father, may I never fall into the trap of worshipping or glorifying angels. An angel could never save mankind but only God incarnate, Your only begotten Son, my Saviour, Jesus Christ could save us. May my worship, glory, and honour be for Him. Praise His holy name, AMEN.
