What Does Hebrews 1:11 Mean?

They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

Hebrews 1:11(KJV)

Verse of the Day

The foundation of the earth was laid by the eternal Son of God, and the heavens are the work of His hand. The One Who fashioned furniture in the humble carpenter's shop, was the eternally existent One Who flung stars into space, and Who formed, fashioned, and filled the empty void with a carpet of living plants, fruit, flowers, and trees. And then God made man in His own image.

Christ is our Creator God and these are the works of His hands, and yet we are told that they shall perish and wear out just like an old garment needs to be discarded. The first creation is transient. This first heaven and earth will one day be destroyed by fire.

Peter tells us that the heavens will one day pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire. The earth and everything on it will be found to be deserving of judgment, for the old creation has been tainted with sin and God will make all things new.

The transient nature of God's creation stands in stark contrast with the self-existence of Deity and the eternality of Christ Jesus our Saviour. The earth and the heavens will one day perish and pass away, but the Word of God endures forever and ever.

In God's redemptive plan for mankind, the old creation will not be preserved. It will 'wax old' and perish and be rolled up like a blanket. It will then be exchanged for a new heavens and a new earth - for God will make all things new.

As Christians, we are already part of that new creation 'in Christ'. We have moved from death to life, from condemnation to acceptance in the beloved Son of God. It was God's grace that sent Christ into the world to be the acceptable sacrifice for your sin and mine. And we became part of that new creation in Him the moment we believe in the only begotten Son of God, for by His death He gave us life - new-life - His resurrected life - His eternal life.

The first heaven and first earth will one day grow old and wear out like a garment, but Christ Jesus, the eternal, living Word of God will remain for forever and ever - and we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. We are one with Him, He is united with us, and we have been made a new creation in Christ. By His grace, we too will behold a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth will pass away.

And in the ages that are to come, by grace through faith in Christ's sacrifice at Calvary, we who are His children, will show forth the immeasurable riches of God's grace in kindness toward us, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, how I praise and thank You that Jesus is the true and living God. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Thank You that by grace through faith in Him, I too will not perish but have everlasting life. I pray that all the days of my life, I will I live, and move, and have my being in Him, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
