What Does Genesis 5:1 Mean?

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

Genesis 5:1(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Before the foundation of the world, God decreed that He would make man in His own image and likeness to have dominion over the earth, under the sovereign rule of God Himself. And so, God prepared a beautiful environment for His creation to enjoy.

And on the sixth day, He made man in His own image and breathed into him the breath of life. On that amazing day that God created him, man became a living being made in the image and likeness of the eternal God.

Like his Creator, man was made with a mind to think, emotions to feel, and a freewill to make choices. The first man, Adam, was created with a spirit, a soul, and a body. And God saw all He had made in that glorious week of creation, and it was very good.

But Adam disrupted God's divine plan, causing his environment to become cursed and inflicting upon himself and the entire race of humanity, the tragic wages of sin which is DEATH.

In His divine omnipotence, the triune God knew that His plan for the perfect Man to rule and reign in His eternal kingdom, would have to be postponed so that the glory of His redemptive grace could be realised. And God's gift of salvation to the human race would be LIFE, eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord - the second Man - the last Adam.

The first man failed to fulfil Deity's plans and purpose for humanity, but the triune Godhead decreed that a second Man would redeem Adam's fallen race from their sins. He was the last Adam and His name would be called Jesus, the only begotten Son of the most high God: "For He shall save His people from their sins."

God is Spirit, but He purposed and planned to be born into the human race, clothed in human flesh and made in the likeness of fallen man, yet without sin. God purposed to become part of that future generation from Adam so that He could save His people from their sins and redeem a race of sinners from eternal death.

And so God in His wisdom and grace, meticulously started to spell out Christ's earthly descendancy from the first Adam (the first man who was made in the image and likeness of God), and then through his son Seth (who was a man made in the image and likeness of the first, fallen Adam; sinful in nature and in need of redemption).

God was to crush the head of the serpent through the promised Seed of the woman Who was to be passed down from the generations of Adam, Seth, Enoch, Noah, and on down though the great patriarchs of old until Jesus (the incarnate Son of God and perfect Son of Man) would finally fulfil God's plans and purpose for mankind. In that day, He will take dominion over the earth, under the sovereign rule of God Himself.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Bible and the wonderful story of redemption which traces the lineage of my Saviour, Jesus Christ, through the generations from Adam, Seth, Noah, Abraham, and Israel. Thank You that You chose to make man in Your own image, and despite sin and its terrible consequences, You determined to save us from our sins, by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. He is our Kinsman-Redeemer through Adam, and He is our eternal God and Saviour Who alone is to be worshipped and glorified. To Him be all praise and glory, world without end, AMEN.
