What Does Genesis 1:11 Mean?

Then God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them"; and it was so.

Genesis 1:11(NASB)

Verse of the Day

In the beginning, God spoke the world into being, creating time and space and matter. At first, He formed and fashioned the world by the Word of His wisdom and the greatness of His majesty, and then He filled the earth with all types of life, both animal and vegetable. And God saw all that He had done was good, very good: "For every good and perfect gifts comes from our Father above," Who alone is our Light, our life, and our hope of salvation.

It was on the third day that God drew together that great mass of water to form the seas and oceans and separated this great body of water from the dry land, calling the majestic mountains from their watery depth into their permanent, stately positions.

But it was also on this third day that God started His creative act of filling the earth with all kinds of plants and grasses, vegetation and foliage, seed-producing herbs, and fruit-bearing trees.

Each plant, shrub, tree, and flower was given the inner seed of life to reproduce after its own kind, in preparation for that day when God would give every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that has fruit with seed in it as food for mankind.

God in His grace was fashioning the world into a perfect paradise for His final act of creation, and man would be formed from the dust of the earth and made in His own image and likeness.

In the beginning, God spoke the world into being and we discover in the pages of Scripture that a handful of chapters were designated to inform us of what God did at the dawn of time, the birth of space, the creation of our world, and the genesis of the human race. But also: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God," and the rest of the Bible is dedicated to another act of creation, the new creation in Christ.

Not only were all things made for Him and by Him, but: "In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." The light of Christ is the true light that shines in the darkness, giving light and life and the hope of salvation to whosoever will.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, how I praise and thank You for all the good gifts that You created for our pleasure and sustenance. Thank You that in You is the seed of life, and light, and hope, and love, and peace, and joy, and salvation. Thank You that in Christ I am a new creation. May I live my life to honour Your name, for You alone are worthy, AMEN.
