And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.Acts 4:33(NASB)
Too often we look at the great power with which the apostles in the early church gave testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and the abundant grace which they received from God in their powerful witness, and bemoan the fact that this is no longer the case today. So what was so different about the inspiring testimony of the early Church, compared with the ineffectiveness of present-day believers?
One significant difference is that the early disciples of Jesus unhesitatingly believed the Scriptures and depended entirely upon the Lord to move on their behalf. Their earnest prayers stood fast on the precious promises of God and demonstrated a collective confidence in Him, to act on their behalf.
Another significant distinction was that they stood fast on the authority given to the Lord Jesus, believing that the same mighty power of God had been entrusted to them - in and through the name of Jesus.
But one vital element is that the early Church delivered a powerful testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This was witness of Christ's absolute sovereignty, proof of their divine authority, and testimony to the immense power of God and the glorious gospel they proclaimed.
But the resurrection also gave each believer a future hope and great confidence, for in Christ the power of sin and death is forever defeated in the lives of all who trust in Him - and abundant grace was upon them all.
May our testimony for the Lord reflect the same confidence in Christ as we boldly proclaim the good news of the death, burial and resurrection of our God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father help me to stand fast on Your mighty promises and boldly proclaim the glorious gospel of grace, trusting in You implicitly and depending upon You in all things, this I ask in Jesus name, AMEN.
