What Does Acts 2:21 Mean?

'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'

Acts 2:21(NASB)

Verse of the Day

It was the prophet Joel in his famous passage about the end times, which was partially quoted by Peter on that first day of Pentecost.. which announced: and it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered.. The verse in Joel continues.. for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape - as the LORD has said, even among the survivors whom the LORD calls.

This famous prophesy had a partial fulfilment on that special day of Pentecost, when the church was born but it will meet its full and final consummation at the end of the seven-year tribulation period.. where we read elsewhere - that by God's grace all Israel shall be saved.

But this beautiful truth is relevant for all who by faith have trusted the Word of the Lord, no matter in which dispensation they lived.. for those who like Abraham believe God and trust in His word are counted by Him as righteous.. God has promised that whosever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved - and we can be sure that this offer of salvation is effective for all - men or women, old or young, black or white, Jew or Gentile, slave or freeman - ALL who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.

To call on the name of the Lord in this Church dispensation however is not simply evoking the name of God as a magical charm or mystical talisman that responds to our every wish and whim.. To call on the name of the Lord is an acknowledgement of the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a confession of Who He is and what He has done as recorded in the Word of God. It is to appeal to the sovereign authority of the Lord for our salvation by faith in Christ.

Praise God that in His grace ALL who call on the name of the Lord in the dispensation of grace will be saved and praise God that the full and final completion of this prophecy from Joel will finally come to fruition, when all Israel calls on the name of the Lord for salvation.. at the end of that terrible time of Jacob's Trouble.

May we who have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus always acknowledge that He is the one and only true God and that His eternal Son was born into the human race to live a perfect life and to die a sacrificial death, so that whosever believe in Him might not perish but have everlasting life.

My Prayer

Thank You Father, that down through the ages all who have called on Your name are delivered and thank You that by grace through faith in the precious blood of Jesus.. I have been saved. May I live and work to Your praise and glory .. in Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
