What Does Romans 10:13 Mean?

For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Romans 10:13(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

This beautiful truth nestles in the midst of the section in Romans where Paul expresses his deep desire that all his fellow Israelites, who had not accepted Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah, would come to saving faith in Him as the Messiah of Israel and the Saviour of the world.

Paul recognised Israel's zeal for the Lord and yet also pointed out that they based their righteousness on 'doing' the works of the Law rather that 'believing' in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.

Like Joel, many other Old Testament prophets of God had called on the nation of Israel to repent of their sins and turn back to the Lord. Once again, the reassuring words of this prophet of old were delivered to whosoever had ears to hear: "For everyone that calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Salvation is offered to anyone who will call on the name of the Lord - and that name is JESUS, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, the message of the Cross and the shed blood of Christ is the power of God to all who believe.

In this Church dispensation, there are many of Paul's Jewish brethren together with many Gentile believers that have called on the name of the Lord because they have trusted in the death, burial, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ as Israel's Messiah and the Saviour of the world.

But the day is coming when this Church dispensation will come to an end, and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will one day re-establish His work through His chosen people Israel.

And in that day everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, what a beautiful truth, that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Thank You for Your perfect plan of salvation. You knew that we were incapable of saving ourselves through the works of the Law, but praise Your holy name that You sent Jesus to be our salvation. He died on the Cross in our place and rose again the third day so that whosoever calls on His name will be saved. Praise the Lord. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
