What Does John 1:29 Mean?

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:29(NASB)

Verse of the Day

John the Baptist was the last and the greatest of God's prophets to Israel, for he was chosen by God to be His herald of the King of kings and to the voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of the Lord," just as had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah.

John had heard the voice of God from heaven declaring, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased," and He witnessed the descent of the Holy Spirit as He came and rested upon Jesus in bodily form like a dove – and this was the sign to John from God that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah of Israel and the promised Redeemer of the world.

Year after year, an innocent lamb was chosen to be the Paschal lamb as a remembrance that God had saved His chosen people from the bondage of Egypt. Year after year, a lamb was chosen as a representative sacrifice for the One that was to come. The representative lamb was examined for four days, for it was to be without spot or blemish or any such thing, because the true Lamb that was to be offered up to God as the propitiation for the sins of mankind, would be pure and unblemished and when He was examined for four days, the verdict would be: "I find no fault in Him, at all."

And so the next day, when John saw the Lord Jesus coming towards him, he cried out like a voice in the wilderness, "BEHOLD, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world."

Every aspect of the Paschal lamb from its selection, examination, and the shedding of its blood, to the roasting and eating of its flesh, was fulfilled in every detail by the true Lamb of God when He came to earth to pay the price for the sin of mankind, for He was to die on the Cross at the very time that the Jews were slaughtering their own little lambs on the altar of the temple.

But they were oblivious to the truth of God's redemptive plan. They were blinded to the truth that Christ was the final Passover Lamb for Israel. They did not recognise that Jesus was the true and only Lamb of God, the sacrificial offering Who takes away the sin of the world.

Let us learn from Israel's mistakes and not become blinded to the glorious truth of our salvation, that the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world, has taken our sin onto His sinless shoulders, redeeming us with His most precious blood.

Praise His holy name.

My Prayer

Loving Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus as the true Lamb of God Who has taken away all my sins. I am so thankful that Jesus died on the Cross for me, becoming the only substitute for my sins. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
