He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:10(NASB)
The opening verses of the good news in John's Gospel, tell of the most glorious visitation to earth of the incarnate Son of God. He is the Word made flesh Who came to earth as the perfect Son of Man. He is the eternal Creator of the world Who is co-equal with the Father, and the Bible introduces Him as Jesus, the Word made flesh, the One from Whom emanates eternal light and life.
He came to bring light to a darkened world. He came to give eternal life to those who were dead in their sins. Jesus came to die for the sin of the whole world so that whosoever would believe on His name would not perish, but have the life of all living things. But then we read the shocking truth: "He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him."
They saw all that He did and heard all that He said. They witnessed His many miracles and followed Him wherever He went. They became His disciples and were astonished by the gracious things He said and all that He did, but most did not believe the Truth and crucified the Lord of Life.
The unbeliever needs to know Him as Saviour, by trusting in His sacrificial death as the one and only substitute for their sin, but the saved man or woman needs to know Jesus personally and intimately. The believer needs to know Him as the greatest of all Prophets, the heavenly Priest Who is the one and only Mediator between God and man, the eternal King of all kings, and glorious Lord of all lords.
As disciples of the Lord, we should not simply follow afar off but develop a heart-desire to know Him as our everlasting Life of lives and eternal Light of all lights.
Heavenly Father, I want to know the Lord Jesus more and more. Develop in me a desire to know Him more. Open my eyes to see Him, open my ears to hear His voice, and open my heart to love Him more and more each day. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
