What Does Hebrews 2:1 Mean?

For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.

Hebrews 2:1(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Words of exhortation or warnings are frequently given to Christians, as are the consequences of ignoring such words of caution. We are exhorted to walk worthy of our calling, to contend earnestly for the faith, to abstain from earthy lusts which war against the soul, and to encourage one another while it is still called 'today' lest any of us are hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

And having received a beautiful picture of the infinite glories, eternal excellence, and unsurpassed pre-eminence of the Son of God above all His creation, we are reminded that in these last day God has revealed Himself to us through His Son. Therefore, we are exhorted to give more earnest heed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross, and to pay very close attention to all that we have heard so that we do not drift away from the truth of God's Word.

If God expected man to pay heed to His prophets in times past, how much more important is it that we give heed to the incarnate Word of God, the Word made flesh Who dwelt amongst us. How vital that we who have received the full revelation of God through the written Scriptures, do not drift away from the truth of the glorious gospel of grace that Jesus came to accomplish on the behalf of all who would believe on His name, in fulfilment of God's promises to His people, Israel.

God has spoken to us through His Son, and we are exhorted not to drift from the important message that has we have received. God knows how fickle the heart of man is. He knows how easy it is for us to slowly drift away from the truth, to develop an indifference to the Word of God, and a fascination for the imaginations of men. He knows how quickly we can become neglectful of our spiritual growth and leave our first love: "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it."

Let us take note of the many scriptural warnings and exhortation to walk worthy of our calling, to contend earnestly for the faith, to abstain from earthy lusts which war against the soul, and to encourage one another while it is still called 'today' lest any of us are hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, or simply drift away from the Lover of our soul.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the unsurpassed pre-eminence of Jesus Christ Who is the visible image of the invisible God and Who alone is worthy of all worship and praise. Keep me looking to Jesus, and may I never drift away through indifference or neglect. May I walk worthy of my calling, anchored to the Rock of my salvation. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
