What Does 2 Peter 3:3 Mean?

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts,

2 Peter 3:3(NASB)

Verse of the Day

God has broken into history on a number of occasions, and Peter is keen to remind us that the time is coming when, once again, God will intervene in a Christ-rejecting sinful world, in order to carry out His plans and purposes to completion.

The Lord stepped into history at the flood when He saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become, for every inclination of the human heart was continuously evil in those days. He confused the languages of humanity at the Tower of Babel, for man was once again united as one in defying their Creator God and following after their own evil lusts.

And God in His mercy, grace, long-suffering, and great love intervened in the chronicles of history when He sent His only begotten Son to die on the Cross so that all Who believe on Him would not perish but have everlasting life.

Today, despite God's previous intervention into the forward march of history, many mock and scores scoff at the biblical prophecies soon to be fulfilled, when God will once again step into the corridors of history to halt the evil advances on a God-hating, Christ rejecting sinful world.

Whether or not Peter is referring to the imminent Rapture of the Church, the Second Coming of Christ at the end of the seven-year Tribulation, or the ushering in of the new heavens and the new earth at the close of His Millennial Kingdom, is almost immaterial - for in these last days, many mockers and scores of scoffers will continue to be content to follow after their own desires and sinful lusts and deny the One who bought them with His own precious blood.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, it is not Your will that anyone should perish but that all should come to repentance and be saved, by grace though faith in Christ. Look down in pity on those that choose to scoff and mock at the glorious gospel of God. In Your mercy, grace, long-suffering, and great love, please open the eyes of some of these scoffers to the truth of Your Word. May they finally accept the free gift of salvation and be brought into Your kingdom. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
