What Does Ephesians 2:14 Mean?

For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,

Ephesians 2:14(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The Lord Jesus Christ has rightly been called the Prince of Peace, for Christ is the propitiation for our sins, bringing peace with God for all who believe in Him. And through Christ Jesus our Lord, those who have trusted in Him as Saviour may have the peace of God which transcends all human understanding guarding their heart and mind, for He has promised to keep in perfect peace those whose mind is stayed on Him.

But there is another type of peace that was brought into the world through Christ, our perfect Prince of Peace. By His death and Resurrection, He has broken down the middle wall of petition that estranged Jew from Gentile, bringing godly reconciliation and uniting us together in the bond of peace and harmony: "For Christ Himself is our peace, Who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall."

Christ was foreordained to be our perfect Prince of Peace before the foundation of the world. God knew that man would sin in the garden and become eternally estranged from his Heavenly Father, but in His grace and justice, God determined that His only begotten Son would become His sacrificial Lamb Who alone could be the propitiation for the sins of the whole world.

Our Kinsman-Redeemer was to be the Seed of the woman. He would be born through the house of Israel, the family of Judah, and the line of David: "And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." Our Kinsman-Redeemer was to be Immanuel, which being interpreted is, 'God with us'.

And His mother was instructed to name Him Jesus, which being interpreted is, 'God is Salvation'. The Prince of Peace was to be the Son of the Most High God: "And the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David."

And by His sacrificial death and glorious Resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ became our peace from that time forward, uniting His chosen people, Israel, with those who were once considered to be heathen, Gentile dogs.

Through His death and Resurrection, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom bringing peace with God for all who believe in Him. The peace of God is given to all whose mind is stayed on Christ. Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus broke down the middle wall of partition between Jew and Gentile, uniting us together into one Body - with one Lord Jesus Christ, one faith in Him for salvation, and one baptism by the Holy Spirit of God into the Body of Christ which is the Church.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You, that I have been made a new creation in Christ. Thank You for giving me the perfect, transcendent, peace of God, which is able to guard my heart and my mind. In Your grace and loving-kindness, You have broken down every barrier that divided Jew from Gentile, male from female, young from old, and made all believers one in Christ. May we who are Your Body, live together in perfect unity with grateful thanks for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to be our Prince of Peace. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
