What Does 2 Corinthians 1:22 Mean?

who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

2 Corinthians 1:22(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The Bible lists over 200 things that are true of all believers who have been saved by grace through faith in the death, burial, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. And in this verse we discover two amazing things that are the birthright of all God's children.

Firstly, we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit of God as His children. Secondly, we have been given the indwelling Holy Spirit of promise in our heart, as a pledge and guarantee of God's everlasting faithfulness to His promises.

Though we were born dead in our trespasses and while we were yet sinners and at enmity with our Creator, Christ died for us. And for His sake, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, giving us the right to call Him: 'Abba Father' As His children we have received the authority to boldly approach His throne of grace in Christ's name, for we are accepted in the Beloved by faith.

We read in John's epistle that having believed in Christ for salvation, we were sealed in Him by the Holy Spirit of promise and that seal of God can never be broken, for the Word of God is true and stands fast forever.

At the moment of salvation we were sealed, and God's seal on His children is a stamp of ownership. We are no longer part of the satanic kingdom of darkness, but a member of Christ's Body; having been transferred into the kingdom of His dear Son, and having become children of the light, by faith.

The seal of God on each believer confirms our union with Christ and our identity as God's purchased possession, for we were bought with a price; the precious blood of Jesus Christ our God and Saviour.

But God not only sealed us, but gave us an actual pledge to validate His unbreakable Word: He sent the Holy Spirit of promise into our hearts as a stamp of His identification with us, to ratify (or to endorse) His seal of ownership on our lives.

God gave the Spirit of promise into our heart as a down payment or as an insurance policy to underscore the indestructible substance of His Word. Eye has not seen and ear has not heard the wonders that God has prepared for His purchased possession who have not only been sealed by Him, but also have the indwelling Holy Spirit of promise in their heart as a pledge and guarantee.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, what an amazing God You are. While I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me and not only saved me and forgave me of my sin, but securely sealed me as Your promised possession. He also sent the Holy Spirit into my heart as a pledge and a guarantee that Your promises to me, and to all Your blood-bought children, can never be broken. Thank You, in Jesus' name, AMEN.
