What Does 1 Corinthians 3:11 Mean?

For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Verse of the Day

During His earthly ministry, Peter confessed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." The Father had revealed this wonderful truth to Peter, and it was upon this stupendous revelation that Christ would build His church. The foundation of the Church would be built on the one and only Rock of Salvation, "and upon this Rock I will build my Church," were the words of Christ, "and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

But what was the solid Rock upon which the Church was to be built? Who is that firm Foundation Stone that is to undergird the Christian Church? Upon which fundamental principle is the gospel of God to be secured? To what must our holy faith be anchored? Well, Paul reveals that no man can lay any other foundation than the One that had already been laid. The foundation of the Christian Church is Jesus Christ, our Lord.

There are those that like to suggest that Jesus was referring to the apostle Peter as the foundation stone for the Church. Entire doctrines have been written on this unscriptural imagination and entire denominations have been founded on this false assumption - for the Lord Jesus alone is the underpinning Bedrock of our gospel and the singular Foundation upon which we are to build our faith. Jesus is the Cornerstone that underpins our faith. Jesus Christ is the Anchor of our hope - and He alone is the fundamental Truth of the glorious gospel of God, "for there is salvation in no one else. There is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."

There are those that like to suggest that the Bible is outdated and that new revelation is being received which gives rise to a different gospel, an alternative Christ, and a substitute truth - which, by definition, is an out and out lie.

Other gospels may be preached - but there is only ONE Truth. Other Christs may be worshipped - but there is only ONE Lord Jesus Christ. Other methods of salvation may be sold to the uninformed - but there is only ONE gospel of salvation, (that the Son of the living God was sent to be our Kinsman-Redeemer, Whose death alone would pay the price for the sin of the whole world and Whose Resurrection alone would give life to all who believe on His name).

He alone suffered, died, and rose again, so that we might be forgiven of our sin and receive life eternal - by faith. Paul warned against replacing the truth with another Jesus, another gospel, and alternative ways of salvation. False Christs, false gospels, false hope, and false teaching comes from the father of lies. But let us be unshakable when it comes to the Rock upon which our faith is founded, "for no man can lay a foundation, other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, how I bless and thank You for Your amazing plan of salvation. Thank You that Your dearly loved Son laid aside His glory to become a man so that He could give up His sinless life and bring many sons into glory - by faith in Him. Thank You that Jesus is the Rock of my salvation and the Foundation Stone upon which my faith is founded. Keep me looking to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith, in Whose name I pray, AMEN.
