What Does 2 Timothy 2:24 Mean?

The Lord's slave must not quarrel, but must be gentle to everyone, able to teach, and patient,

2 Timothy 2:24(HCSB)

Verse Thoughts

We are called to be bond-servants of the Lord and as such are not to follow our own wishes but those of Jesus Christ our Savior. As His servants we are all called to share the truth of the glorious gospel of grace, despite the fact that the life of a believer is far from easy.

Many of those with whom we desire to share the good news of Christ oppose the Word of God and make it difficult and discouraging for us to share this precious truth. But Paul in his final epistle to Timothy admonished us to avoid arguments and disputes that cause friction and discord, and to speak the truth in love.

We are not to be quarrelsome and argumentative in our delivery of the truth, but rather we are to be gentle, gracious, kind-hearted and patient to everyone, including those who oppose and ridicule us.

We are to display the fruit of the spirit in whatever life- circumstance we find ourselves to be. It is not sufficient for us to expose error and identify false teachings. We are to be equipped by the Spirit to give wise instruction and biblically based truth to all who oppose us t ando teach that truth in love.

Let all of us who are bond-servants of the Lord Jesus avoid quarrelsome disputes but rather may we be gentle, gracious, kind-hearted and patient to everyone, as we seek to teach the truth in love - to the glory of God.

My Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times when I have been reluctant to share the gospel with those who scoff at Your word or have been quarrelsome with those that seem to thrive on arguing with me. Help me to be ready to give an answer for the truth of the gospel with patience and in gentleness of spirit and as I am lead by Your Holy Spirit, and not by my own emotional reaction - I ask this in the name of Jesus, AMEN,
