What Does 2 Peter 2:1 Mean?

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

2 Peter 2:1(NASB)

Verse of the Day

In talking to the believers of his day, Peter not only reminded them that although the Scriptures were written by human authors, whose writings demonstrated their individual personality their personal vocabulary and their own indigenous style.. nonetheless, the Scriptures they wrote are divinely inspired, by the Holy Spirit of God.

The New Testament is equally inspired of God, equally without error or contradiction and equally written by plenary authority of God Himself. And the apostle Peter.. as one such holy men of God was moved to pen this portion of Scripture

Peter was led to give a serious warning concerning false teachers and false prophets in this church age, just as the prophets of old recognised this same, serious assault on the Word of God and His authority among the children of men.

Just as there were false teachers, lying prophets, seducing spirits and great deceptions of old so Peter warned the recipients of his letter to expect the same, for such evil people will always abound - they will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Lord Jesus Himself, Who bought them, with His own precious blood.

Satan is the master counterfeiter and throughout man's 6000 year-long history.. since the fall of Adam, the enemy of our soul has been counterfeiting the truth, promulgated his own distorted gospel and flooding the world with deceit, corruption and fear, in an attempt to shipwreck the faith of believers and overthrow the authority and sovereignty of God Himself.

Sadly Peter lets us know that many will follow their pernicious, greedy, hypocritical and immoral ways, and they will have many eager disciples, who follow after their ungodly teachings, with itching ears - and sadly it is through them that the Christian Church will be brought into disrepute.

But just as the prophetic Word of God is an historical document that demonstrates the destruction of all who seek to usurp the authority and sovereignty of God - so too we have an assurance in the same Holy Scriptures, that swift destruction will one day fall on all false teachers and prophets and those that rail against the most high God.

The day is fast approaching when those that take counsel against God and against His anointed Son, will be broken to fragments with a rod of iron and smashed into little pieces like a potter's vessel. The Word of the Lord, Who sits in the heavens will never fail, for the day is coming when He will judge the world in righteousness - by the Man Christ Jesus, Whom God Himself has appointed.

For the time being however we are living in a dangerous and ungodly world where false teachings and destructive doctrines abound.. but let us also remember that a day is coming when they will all be brought to destruction.

Let us never forget that we have a more sure Word of prophesy which is found in the divinely, inspired Word of God. Let us read, mark, learn and inwardly digest all that God has given to us in His written Word.. so that we are not tossed about by every wind of doctrine.. but stand fast on the Word of Truth.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word of truth and the warnings against false teachers and their destructive doctrines. Keep me under the shadow of Your wing and guide me into all truth in Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
