His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."John 2:5(NASB)
At the very start of His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus had to establish His God-appointed authority on earth, for as He set out on His three year walk towards the Cross He would honour no other instruction than those that came from His Father in heaven.
His mother had often pondered the gracious words and godly wisdom she heard from the only begotten Son of the Father, and she had to began to understand what we all have to learn - that there is an unbridgeable gulf between God and man which only the Lord Jesus is able to span. But it would be achieved in God's way and in God's time.
Mary had to be reminded Who Jesus was and that His mission could never be influenced by mortal man or woman. She learned that there was an impassable chasm between Christ's sinless Deity and her own sinful humanity, when graciously but firmly He addressed her with the words: "Woman, what have I to do with thee?"
No doubt a sword began to pierce her soul, for she immediately relinquished her parental authority over her uniquely conceived firstborn Son with the words: "Whatever He says to you, do it."
Mary did what we are all called to do - she pointed others to God's only begotten Son; she directed their attention away from herself to the Lord Jesus Christ; she decreased in her own self-importance and elevated the eternal Son of God and sinless Son of Man Who today is seated at the right hand of the Father in heavenly places.
For there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful example of Mary, the dear mother of Jesus. She understood Who Jesus was and pointed others away from herself, to Him. In the same way, help me to keep my eyes looking to Jesus, pointing others away from myself, to Him. May I lift Him up in all I say and do, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
