"I and the Father are one."John 10:30(NASB)
Jesus knew that the hour of His death was approaching and so He prepared to lead the lost sheep of the house of Israel out of their sheepfold.. and join them together with His “other sheep', for whom He also would soon shed His blood.
The increasing resistance of the Jewish leaders, who constantly called for more and more evidence of His claimed Messiah-ship were about to hear the clear evidence of Christ right to the throne of Israel, I and the Father are One.
Israel's leaders knew this was His claim to be almighty God, which was why they sought to stone Him - the legal, God-given punishment for such a claim.. But for those who believe in the Word made flesh, this is the most stunning and glorious statements - I and My Father are One..one in essence, one in character, one in purpose, one in power.
The eternal Son of God, united together with the Father and the Spirit is an undisputed member of that holy, triune Deity - infinite, perfect gracious and good - the second person of the Holy Trinity.
And yet this God-Man humbled Himself. He laid aside His eternal glory and infinite strength for a season, and took upon Himself the form of a man. He clothed Himself in the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
And for thirty-three years, the eternal Son of God lived the life of a man.. as God intended man to live. Although perfect Deity, Jesus lived in humble submission and perfect obedience to God - full of wisdom and grace.. in perfect union and unbroken fellowship with His Father - by the power of the indwelling Spirit.
Though He was God, Christ lived as man in utter dependence upon the Father. In the same way we are called to live in total dependence, upon the Son, and in joyful obedience to His will.
But this can only be achieved in a moment by moment submission to the indwelling Holy Spirit.. so that Christ may be seen in us - until we are nothing and He is all in all.
Heavenly Father, thank You for this glorious truth that Christ in His humanity demonstrated how I may live, as you intend all your children to live. Help me to live in total dependence, joyful obedience and full submission to Your will and purpose in my life - until like the apostle Paul I may say, “it is not I that live in this body, but Christ Who lives in me', in Whose name I pray, AMEN.
