What Does Ephesians 3:19 Mean?

and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:19(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The dimensions of Christ's love for His Church are unfathomable and enfold all those who will trust in His name for salvation, whether they be Jew or Gentile, bond or free, male or female, black or white, young or old.

But Christ's love for the Church was a mystery that was hidden from past generations, and yet it was revealed to Paul on our account so that we might know for certain the incomprehensible love of Christ. This love which far surpasses all human knowledge, entitles and enables us, through our union with Him, to be filled up to all the fullness of God. This truth is so profound that it can only scratch the surface of our spiritual understanding.

Oh, how great are the riches of God's wisdom and grace. How unfathomable is His knowledge and kindness. How impossible it is for the limited human mind to understand the thoughts and ways of Almighty God! The dimensions of Christ's love for the Church have been described as vast as a mighty ocean without shores, and as lofty as the highest mountain without a summit.

All the fullness of the Godhead dwells in the Lord Jesus Christ, and our union with Him makes us complete in Him and accepted by the Father. And although this knowledge is too wonderful to comprehend, it is nonetheless Paul's dear desire that we KNOW the riches of His grace towards us and that we UNDERSTAND the length, and depth, and height, and breadth of Christ's love for us, which surpasses human knowledge.

Paul wants us to really know this truth in our own lives and to grasp hold of it with our whole being so that we may be filled to all the fullness of God, which is ours by grace through faith in Christ Jesus our Saviour.

The more we abide in Christ, the more He abides in us and the more He dwells in our heart, in spirit and in truth. The more we rest in Him, the more we find that we are being filled to a measure of all the fullness of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We could never be filled WITH all the fullness of God, for only Deity is an eternal Being, and His fullness is immeasurable, limitless, inexhaustible, and never-ending, but we can be filled UNTO the fullness of God. We can go on being filled by means of the Spirit of God. We can day by day be filled to the fullness of God. But just as we will never fathom the depth of the riches of His grace towards us, so we can never have all His fullness, but we can be filled to our level of completeness.

Just as a thimble can be filled to over-flooding with water when dipped into the vast shoreless ocean without exhausting the ocean's capacity, so we too can be filled to a measure of the fullness of God. We can saturate ourselves in His presence and impregnate ourselves with the water of the Word of life until we are filled with all the fullness of God. But this is a mystery that staggers the understanding and surpasses human knowledge, and in which we stand in awe and wonderment.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that I am in Christ. Through His blood, I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting. I pray that I may be filled to the fullness of Christ, day by day, as I saturate myself in Your Word and seek only to do those things that are pleasing in Your sight and in line with Your will for my life. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
