What Does Colossians 1:6 Mean?

which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;

Colossians 1:6(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The Word of God is alive and has within its pages the germ of godly living, just as a tiny ear of corn has within its kernel an abundant wheat harvest. The gospel of Christ is living and powerful, and when this living, God-breathed gospel of God's grace is planted in the heart of a spirit-filled, born-again believer and watered with living waters from on high, that tiny germ of life will begin to grow and develop and bring forth fruit - more fruit - much fruit, to the glory of God.

The Colossian Christians exemplified a little group of believers who were walking in spirit and truth and who had brought forth the spiritual fruit of faith, hope, and love in abundance, and Paul rejoiced to hear that individually and collectively they were growing in grace and in a knowledge of their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The faith of this little church had spread far and wide, and their heartfelt love for the Lord Jesus and for each other was similarly known to Paul. Further, we discover that they rejoiced with a deep-seated hope, knowing the joy that was stored up for them in heaven - all of which was evidence of their devotion to the Lord and to one another.

Their faith came by hearing the Word of God, and their fruitfulness resulted as they acted upon their trust in Christ, their faith in God's Word, and their dependence upon Him.

The Colossians Christians sincere, selfless love came from God - for God is love and genuine love comes from Him alone. And their love bore witness to their great salvation in Christ, for everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God - everyone who is walking in spirit and truth is knit together in Christian love.

Their hope was built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death and glorious Resurrection. Their day by day hope in God was secured to the Rock of their salvation and His faithfulness to complete the good work that He had started in each of their lives. But they also knew that their future hope of their glorious inheritance had already been secured for them in heaven and rested on the promises of God's unchanging Word.

May we who are born of God and know Him as our Saviour and Lord, be consistent in bearing the fruit of righteousness and become increasingly fruitful in our lives as a true and living witness to others. May we continue to grow in grace, day by day, and be ready and willing to share the good news of the glorious gospel of the grace of God in spirit and in truth - in our little corner of God's vineyard - to the glory of God.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the living, powerful, and glorious gospel of Christ, which was planted in my heart by many faithful witnesses. I pray that I too may be a good and faithful servant and abide in Your love, day by day, in spirit and in truth. I pray that I may bring forth the precious fruit of faith, love, hope, and righteousness. Help me to grow in grace and in a knowledge of You, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
