What Does John 9:4 Mean?

"We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

John 9:4(NASB)

Verse Thoughts

Christ only had a small window of opportunity in His earthly walk, to work the works of the Father Who sent Him. Christ had come into the world to be the light of the world and to be the One Whose death, burial and resurrection would reconcile the world back to Himself - so that all who believe in Him could be presented faultless and blameless, before Him.

Christ had come into the world to carry out the will of His Father in heaven, and during the short span of time that Jesus lived on earth, He was called to deliver God's message of reconciliation to a world that was lost, dying, blinded and doomed - before He would give His life as a ransom for many.

Christ knew that every moment of His life that passed was precious and must not be wasted. Every opportunity had to be utilised to the full - but not in His own strength, for His mission was to carry out the work that His Father had sent Him to do. Jesus had to complete His life-work in spirit and in truth - only doing those things that He heard from His Father in heaven and living day by day in complete submission to the indwelling Holy Spirit.

What a wonderful witness of the way that we should live our Christian lives.. in spirit and in truth - and in complete submission to the Holy Spirit, only doing those things that we hear from God. What a solemn warning to work the works of Him Who has called us out of darkness into His glorious light, knowing that our brief time on earth is the only small window of opportunity that we have to live our lives as unto the Lord - for the night indeed is coming when no man can work.

Let us therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light and live in the light of His truth and love. And let us share the gospel of reconciliation with all with whom we come in contact, before this brief life-span on earth is passed and gone.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Christ's example of a Man Who worked the works of God and Who used every precious moment to carry out Your will through His life. I pray that I may follow His example and live my life in complete submission to Your indwelling Holy Spirit. Give me the opportunity to share the gospel of reconciliation with others, knowing that the night is coming when none of us will be able to work. I pray that the good work that You started in me at salvation, will be completed to Your praise and glory at the coming of Christ, AMEN.
