What Does Ephesians 5:8 Mean?

for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

Ephesians 5:8(ESV)

Verse Thoughts

We have been lifted up out of a world of deep darkness, into the light of the glorious gospel of God's grace. Our walk through this life as the children of God, is to become a day-by-day lifestyle, that is pleasing and honouring to the Lord.

Our life-walk should be a reflection of His goodness and grace, His righteousness and integrity, His kindness and gentleness, His truth and His sincerity. Our Christian life should reflect His humility and patient endurance, and our life should blossom into godly fruitfulness, reflecting the love of God, in the face of Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is a world of difference between the unsaved life and the life that we have in Christ. Before salvation we were children of the night and a product of the darkness of sin. The unsaved soul is trapped in the dungeon of sin, but by faith we can cast off the works of darkness, and be clothed in His armour of light.

God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. In the beginning He commanded the light to shine out of darkness and in the fullness of time He sent His only Son to be the Light of the world, and to give light to everyone coming into the world. By faith in Christ He has shone the light of His love and truth into our hearts. He has given all who are born from above the light of the knowledge of the glory of God - in Jesus Christ our Lord.

It was prideful rebellion against the Lord that enslaved us to sin and entrapped us in the darkness of this world system, but we have been bought with a price - the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and so our joyful calling is to glorify God in our body and in spirit - for we belong to Him.

He not only made us but has bought us back from the slave-market of sin. We have been supernaturally delivered from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of Christ. As His people, we are instructed to shun the unfruitful works of darkness and expose them. Having been saved by grace, we are living in the light of the Lord.. and the fruit of His light is discovered in all that is good and righteous and godly and true.

Our union with Christ has brought us into the light of His grace and truth, and the fruit of the Spirit should be manifest in all we say and do. Let us walk in the light as He is in the light so that the fruit of His love will be displayed in all we are.

Let us live our lives as children of the light so that the light of the glorious gospel of grace may become a witness to the world that we are children of God and partakers of His divine nature. May we live in such a way that others see our holy conduct and glorify our Father in heaven.

Being translated from darkness to light and from the kingdom of Satan into God's kingdom of light, should cause each of us to rejoice evermore and to give never-ending thanks and praise for the work He has done within us. We have been translated out of darkness into His amazing and marvellous light and are now children of light and children of the day.

May we walk as children of light and shine the light of the love of God's goodness and grace into the lives of all we meet, knowing that we who were once lost in darkness, and estranged from the light of God's eternal love, because of the inner darkness of our fallen nature, have by His grace been made light in the Lord.

My Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, how I long to reflect the light of Your love as I journey through this dark world. Thank You for bringing me into the wonderful light of Your saving grace. Please help me to walk in spirit and truth so that I may be used as a channel through whom Your love, grace, healing and forgiveness may flow to others. In the name of Jesus' I pray, AMEN.
